When the historic beachfront Hotel del Coronado opened in 1888 just across the San Diego Bay from San Diego, the 399-room resort hotel was the largest in the world. It is the second largest wooden structure in the US.

Glenwood Cottage, built in 1876 by Christopher Miller, was developed into the Mission Inn in Riverside, starting in 1882, by Miller’s son, Frank. It is generally considered the largest Mission Revival Style building in the US.

Modjeska House, also known as Arden, was the home of Mme. Helena Modjeska. It was designed and built by architect Stanford White in Modjeska Canyon in 1888. It is a California Historical Landmark and National Historic Landmark.

In 1841, Don Jose Serrano created his Rancho Canada de los Alisos in the area of El Toro, now Lake Forest. In 1863 the Serrano Family built an adobe on the ranch which remains on its original site in the Heritage Hill Historical Park.
