The Southern Pacific Railroad Depot in Whittier consists of a two-story central section built in 1888 and a long one-story extension added in 1895. It is the only remaining Southern Pacific Common Standard No. 18 depot in Southern California.

Pío Pico sold his land in the San Fernando Valley to raise money to build Pico House, “the most luxurious hotel in all of Southern California,” in the heart of Los Angeles. Construction began in September 1869 and the hotel opened in June 1870.

Plaza Firehouse, in the heart of historic Los Angeles, was built in 1884. Fire House No. 1, as it is also called, was the 1st building in the city designed to house a crew of fire fighters, the Volunteer 38s, and their equipment.

The citriculture industry in Southern California, sometimes called the “second California Gold Rush,” started in 1873 in Riverside when Eliza Tibbets planted two starter trees of a strain of navel orange tree from Bahia, Brazil.

The Hay Tree in Paramount is the only reminder of the area’s busy hay and dairy industry in the mid-1900s. The camphor tree, planted in the late 19th century, is preserved in a corner of the Paramount Civic Center Plaza.

On May 6, 1856, Thomas Whaley began construction on a new home in what is now the Old Town area of San Diego and proclaimed “My new house, when completed, will be the handsomest, most comfortable and convenient place in town or within 150 miles of here.”

The history of the Workman House at the Homestead Museum in the City of Industry reflects the fortunes of area pioneer William Workman. Originally built in l842 as a simple, rectangular building, it expanded to its present form in 1872.
