A Photography Project
Three of the five Pomona historic districts are residential areas. Lincoln Park was established in 1998, Wilton Heights in 1999 and Hacienda Park in 2003. Over 1300 residences dating back to the 1800s are listed in the districts.

In 1914, Samuel Kraemer built the first two-story structure in the growing town of Placentia. Constructed of red brick with a white glazed brick veneer, Kraemer himself heralded it as the “most impressive building in town.”

The cornerstone of the Masonic Temple in Santa Ana was laid on December 5, 1930. Designed by Horace B. Austin in a modified Gothic Revival style with Moderne influences, construction of the 4-story building was completed in 1931.

In 1904, Charles and Henry Greene were hired to develop the master plan for the Oaklawn Place subdivision in South Pasadena that included a bridge over the Santa Fe Railway tracks to Fair Oaks Avenue and a waiting station for Pacific Electric passengers.

The Colonial Revival style Heartwell-Lowe House was built in the Bluff Park area of Long Beach in 1919. The 2-story, 2,366 sq ft house was the home of Col. Charles L. Heartwell, who played a leading role in the development of the City.

The 24-room Hotel Sierra Madre, built in 1887, was designed by Samuel and Joseph Cather Newsom. The Pinney House, as it came to be called, was used as a sanatorium, boarding house, ballroom dance studio, apartment complex and film location.

The citriculture industry in Southern California, sometimes called the “second California Gold Rush,” started in 1873 in Riverside when Eliza Tibbets planted two starter trees of a strain of navel orange tree from Bahia, Brazil.
