Founded in 1798 by Padre Fermin Francisco de Lasuen, the Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside was named for 13th-century French King Louis IX. Nicknamed the “King of the Missions,” it was the 18th of 21 missions built in Alta California.

Standing on the site of the 1st mission and fort in California in 1769, the building known as the San Diego Presidio, designed by William Templeton Johnson, was built in 1928-29 by the city of San Diego on land donated by George Marston.

Directly south of Mission San Fernando Rey de España on part of the original land grant of the Mission, the Memory Garden is part of Brand Park, named after Leslie Brand, who donated the land to the City of Los Angeles in 1920.

The Old Orange County Courthouse in Santa Ana is Southern California’s oldest court building. From its dedication in 1901, this granite and sandstone building has been the traditional home of county government.

In 1837, Mexican Governor Juan B. Alvarado granted a 22,000-acre tract of land to Don Ygnacio Palomares and Don Ricardo Vejar. Palomares built what is credited as the first structure in the Pomona valley and, by 1854, Adobe de Palomares.

Founded in 1769, the Mission San Diego de Alcalá was the 1st of the mission churches in California. In 1931 it was rebuilt to what architects J. E. Loveless & J. Marshall Miller determined was what the 1813 church must have looked like.
