Mission San Luis Rey, Oceanside, San Diego County

Mission San Luis Rey

Founded in 1798 by Padre Fermin Francisco de Lasuen, the Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside was named for 13th-century French King Louis IX. Nicknamed the “King of the Missions,” it was the eighteenth of the twenty-one Spanish missions built in Alta California. The church was rebuilt from 1892-1912, and has continued to be strengthened and restored. The mission is an active Franciscan church. It is a California Historical Landmark, a US National Historical Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
