Morro Rock, the ‘Gibraltar of the Pacific,’ is undeniably the most distinctive and recognizable landmark of Morro Bay. The 576 foot tall rock at the mouth of the harbor is a volcanic plug that formed about 23 million years ago.

In March 1782, Junipero Serra celebrated a High Mass and dedicated a mission to San Buenaventura, the 9th and last founded during his life. The mission is located in the historic downtown of Ventura and remains an active Catholic parish.

Fr. José María de Zalvidea built El Molino Viejo, the Old Mill, in 1816 in the San Rafael Hills of present-day San Marino. The oldest commercial structure in So. California served as the grist mill for San Gabriel Mission until 1823.

Although the creators are unknown, this Maze Stone in Hemet is considered a prehistoric petroglyph and a historic landmark. It was discovered in 1914 by the owner of the property and was ultimately donated to Riverside County in 1956.

Natural asphalt (brea in Spanish) has seeped up from the ground in the Hancock Park area of LA for millennia. Prof. William Denton recognized animal remains in the tar as fossils in 1875. The 1st large excavation project began in 1909.

The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is an outdoor sports multi-purpose stadium in Exposition Park in Los Angeles. Conceived as a hallmark of civic pride, the Coliseum was commissioned in 1921 as a memorial to L.A. veterans of World War I.

Rancho El Encino passed through many hands and dwindled in size as owners sold off large and small parts before the State of California purchased the last remaining parcel in 1949 to create the Los Encinos State Historic Park.
