Natural asphalt (brea in Spanish) has seeped up from the ground in the Hancock Park area of LA for millennia. Prof. William Denton recognized animal remains in the tar as fossils in 1875. The 1st large excavation project began in 1909.

The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is an outdoor sports multi-purpose stadium in Exposition Park in Los Angeles. Conceived as a hallmark of civic pride, the Coliseum was commissioned in 1921 as a memorial to L.A. veterans of World War I.

Rancho El Encino passed through many hands and dwindled in size as owners sold off large and small parts before the State of California purchased the last remaining parcel in 1949 to create the Los Encinos State Historic Park.

The Ventura County Courthouse Annex was built on a rise overlooking Main Street in 1912-13. Found to be seismically unsound, it closed in 1969. The City of Ventura purchased it from the County, restored it and made it City Hall.

Old Town in San Diego is the location of the 1st European settlement in California. It is the oldest neighborhood and remained the heart of the city until the 1860s when Alonzo Horton began development of present-day Downtown San Diego.

This nondescript building in Fontana was the 1st and only federal facility in the US for the study of breeding and raising rabbits. Under Dr. Geo Templeton, the operation nearly doubled litter production to a peak of over 4,000 rabbits.

The Star of India at the San Diego Maritime Museum is the world’s oldest active sailing ship. Originally named Euterpe, it was built in Ramsey, Isle of Man, in 1863. It was renamed Star of India in 1901 during its service in Alaska.
