Granville Spurgeon House

Granville Spurgeon joined his brother, William H. Spurgeon, in Santa Ana in 1870. In 1879, Granville had a modest 1,426 sq ft, Victorian style house built for his bride, Frederica, and lived there until his death in August 1901. “With his brother [William], Granville Spurgeon conducted the first mercantile establishment in Santa Ana… Later he established a thriving fire insurance business.” He was nominated to be postmaster in 1887. “In later years he purchased a tract of 100 acres of… land devoting this to the production of celery.” It was said that “in his passing this city lost one of her stanch upbuilders and one who occupied a distinctive place in her development.” Granville Spurgeon House is a Landmark in the Santa Ana Register of Historic Properties.
