Loyola Theater

Fox West Coast Theatres opened the Loyola Theater in the Westchester area of Los Angeles on October 3, 1946. It was one of the first buildings in Westchester’s main business district along Sepulveda Blvd. Clarence J. Smale designed the Skouras-style building that featured a swan neck tower that rose about 60 feet above the theater marquee. Carl G. Moeller, Fox circuit’s chief designer, designed the interior. The theater was declared a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1982, likely to save it from demolition as it was closed that year. It became an Eastern church for the religious group following the Maharaji for a short time. When they vacated the building the interior was gutted and it was converted into office space. The co-owner at the time said that keeping the facade for an office building would be “somewhat bizarre,” but it has remained intact so far.
