Kellogg House

The H. Clay Kellogg House is the centerpiece of the Heritage Museum of Orange County in Santa Ana. Hiram (H. Clay) Kellogg was born in Napa County in 1855. The family moved to Anaheim in 1868. He opened a sundries shop in Santa Ana with one of his brothers. The successful business allowed him to attend college and earn a degree in civil engineering. His first important engineering job was laying out the town of Elsinore in 1883. From 1894 to 1899, he was the Orange County Surveyor responsible for many of the county’s major roads and bridges. In 1898, Kellogg built one of the first Neo-classical Victorian homes in Orange County. Fascinated with tall ships, he designed the three-story-high circular staircase, the centerpiece of the house, around a ship’s mast. The house was originally located in downtown Santa Ana and moved to HMOC in 1980.
