Designed by architect Robert V. Derrah as a cosmopolitan shopping center, Crossroads of the World in Hollywood was completed in 1936. The central Streamline Moderne structure “sails” down an international street lined with shops.

The Pioneer Church was built in Chatsworth in 1903 on land donated by prominent community figure Nelson Gray. It was abandoned and threatened with demolition, but was saved, moved and restored in 1965 by the Chatsworth Historical Society.

In 1901, the Third Street Tunnel opened beneath Bunker Hill. In May, Col. J.W. Eddy sought and received City Council approval to build a funicular, an incline railway, by the tunnel. The Angels Flight Railway opened on December 31.

The 13-story Capitol Records Tower in Hollywood was designed by Louis Naidorf. Construction was completed in April 1956. The mural by artist Richard Wyatt Jr. on the south wall, entitled “Hollywood Jazz: 1945-1972,” was restored in 2011.

Avila Adobe, built in 1818 on Olvera Street, is the oldest existing house in LA. Damaged by the 1971 earthquake, it was restored to its 1840s condition by the LA Dept of Recreation and Parks and Los Amigos del Pueblo.

Dedicated in 1961 by VP Lyndon B. Johnson, the Theme Building at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), was renovated in 1997 with lighting by Walt Disney Imagineering to add the Encounter Restaurant and Observation Level.

Built in 1939, Los Angeles Union Station is the largest railroad passenger terminal in the Western US and is widely regarded as “the last of the great train stations.” Its Mission Moderne style makes it an LA architectural gem.
