In 1928, the Board of Deacons of the First Baptist Church in Ventura commissioned Hollywood-based architect Robert Stacy-Judd to design what was the first ecclesiastic building embodying Mayan architectural forms & art motifs in the US.

In 1900, Dr. Cephas and Thomas Bard purchased property at the corner of Fir and Poli streets in Ventura to build a hospital in memory of their mother, Elizabeth Bard. Dr. Bard died at the new hospital in April 1902 at age 56.

Moving to Los Angeles in 1893, Peter Janss became a land developer and, with sons Harold and Edwin, formed the Janss Corporation. In the early 1900s they purchased 10,000 acres in the Conejo Valley and began planning a total community.

The Ventura County Courthouse Annex was built on a rise overlooking Main Street in 1912-13. Found to be seismically unsound, it closed in 1969. The City of Ventura purchased it from the County, restored it and made it City Hall.

Architect Robert Houvener won a national competition with his design of the 1st City of Thousand Oaks City Hall. Dedicated on Feb 24, 1973, the City occupied the 2 buildings built into a hilltop overlooking the Oaks Mall until 1988.

Architect L. A. Smith designed the Ventura Theatre in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. Robert E. Power Studios of San Francisco designed the lavish, elegant interior of gilt and opulence “in the style of the great movie palaces.”

The Crowley House in Thousand Oaks was built in 1910 on what was then the Newbury Ranch for newlyweds Frank and Mae Casey Crowley. In the early 1920s it served as a real estate office for the 1st housing development in the Conejo Valley.
