In 1921, the City of San Diego set aside a permanent tract of land in Balboa Park initially to house the exotic animal exhibits abandoned after the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, creating the San Diego Zoo.

The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad Depot, sometimes referred to as Union Station, in San Diego was built in time for the 1915 Panama-California International Exposition. It is an active transportation center in the heart of downtown.

Old Town in San Diego is the location of the 1st European settlement in California. It is the oldest neighborhood and remained the heart of the city until the 1860s when Alonzo Horton began development of present-day Downtown San Diego.

The Grand Horton was a luxury hotel built in 1887 with a design based on the Innsbruck Inn in Vienna, Austria. Scheduled for demolition in the 1970s, the hotel was dismantled brick by brick and rebuilt into an entirely new hotel in 1986.
