The citriculture industry in Southern California, sometimes called the “second California Gold Rush,” started in 1873 in Riverside when Eliza Tibbets planted two starter trees of a strain of navel orange tree from Bahia, Brazil.

The Civic Clock Tower on the southwest side of City Hall in Riverside is one of numerous City-designated monuments and memorials. Built in 1996, It was dedicated in 1971 “In Honored Memory of Officers Christiansen and Teel Killed in Line of Duty April 2, 1971.”

Charles Morgridge Loring, a Minneapolis businessman, spent his winters in the Riverside area in the late 1800s. In 1889, he commissioned Riverside architect A.C. Willard to design a three-story office block with an adjoining opera house.

According to the Riverside Museum, “The National Historic Landmark Harada House is a powerful civil rights landmark in California.” Purchased by Jukichi Harada in 1915, fundraising has finally provided the means to start restoration work.

The Riverside Municipal Auditorium in Riverside opened on November 12, 1928. Frank Miller, owner of the Mission Inn, deeded the land to the city with the stipulation that the property be “maintained in perpetuity” as a Soldiers Memorial.

The carillon and clock tower at University of California Riverside (UCR) were a gift from Phillip & Dorothy Boyd. The 48-bell carillon was produced by the Paccard Bell Foundry in France. It was dedicated on October 2, 1966.

The First Congregational Church in Riverside moved to their present location and constructed a wooden church in 1887. In 1912 the cornerstone was laid for the present church building designed by Myron Hunt in the Spanish Revival style.
