Andreas Canyon near Palm Springs has a spring-fed, perennial creek that sustains the world’s second largest California Fan Palm (Washingtonia filifera) oasis as well as other trees, a multitude of plant species and diverse wildlife.

The citriculture industry in Southern California, sometimes called the “second California Gold Rush,” started in 1873 in Riverside when Eliza Tibbets planted two starter trees of a strain of navel orange tree from Bahia, Brazil.

The first all-metal house in the United States was built in a short 10 days as a case study in New York in 1931. It was purchased and moved to Palm Springs in 2017; reassembly started in 2023 on a parking lot of the Palm Springs Art Museum.

The Civic Clock Tower on the southwest side of City Hall in Riverside is one of numerous City-designated monuments and memorials. Built in 1996, It was dedicated in 1971 “In Honored Memory of Officers Christiansen and Teel Killed in Line of Duty April 2, 1971.”

The Tramway Gas Station, which now serves as the Palm Springs Visitor Center at the northwest entrance to Palm Springs on Highway 111 at Tramway Road, was designed and built by architects Albert Frey and Robson Chambers in 1965.

Seward Johnson’s tribute to Marilyn Monroe, a 26-foot-tall, 34,000-pound sculpture titled Forever Marilyn, was created in 2011. It was moved from city to city, including Palm Springs, until finding a permanent home in Palm Springs in 2021.

Water towers aren’t rare. Nor do they always “tower” over the area. But they are all landmarks, to a greater or lesser extent, as they all “enable someone to establish their location.”
