Home Savings and Loan
The Home Savings and Loan, now a Chase Bank, at Sunset and Vine in Hollywood is perhaps one of the better known bank buildings designed by Millard Sheets. Said to be one of his personal favorites, the building features a mural with mosaic portraits of 16 notable Hollywood stars and the names of many more in front, a set of elaborate stained-glass windows by Susan Hertel and more portraits flanking the rear doors. Built on the site where parts of Hollywood’s first full-length motion picture, The Squaw Man, were filmed in 1913, the bank opened on June 15, 1968. A large fountain surrounding a sculpture by Paul Manship of Europa riding Zeus in bull form sits in front of the bank. As one source put it, the simple white New Formalist structure stands out as a seminal project in his career.
