Bixby Knolls Maternity Hospital
In 1937, Long Beach Maternity Hospital hired structural engineer Francis H. Gentry to design a new facility in the Bixby Knolls area of Long Beach. Plans for the Streamline Moderne-style 2-story facility were completed in July. Construction finished in time for the hospital to announce its new location and new name, Bixby Knolls Maternity Hospital, as part of its 1937 holiday greetings in the Long Beach Sun. An article about 1937 “Christmas babies” in the Press-Telegram included the birth of a son and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Owen Dunbar at the new hospital. The closing date for Bixby Knolls Maternity Hospital isn’t available in online sources, but some time around 2000, the building was occupied by Dental Health Services. The building was recently renovated and is now used by Unity Adult Day Healthcare, an affiliate service of Kaiser Permanente.
