Lucas Museum of Narrative Art
Originally planned to be located in San Francisco, then Chicago, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art took place at the west end of Exposition Park in Los Angeles on March 14, 2018. Initially set to open in 2021, the COVID-19 pandemic, availability of materials and changes in leadership and curatorial vision have pushed the opening out to 2026. The museum’s 300,000-square-foot building was designed by renowned architect Ma Yansong of MAD Architects with Stantec as executive architect and is sited on an 11-acre campus with extensive new green space designed by Studio-MLA. The museum will feature expansive galleries, two state-of-the-art theaters, and dedicated spaces for learning and engagement, dining, retail and events.
Co-founders George Lucas and Mellody Hobson signed the Giving Pledge in 2010, committing to dedicate the majority of their wealth to improving education, particularly through the arts. Experiencing and collecting art is a shared passion with decades of collecting between them. Narrative art appears in many forms, from cave drawings and hieroglyphics to paintings, murals, illustration, comics, and sculpture. The Lucas Museum will show how narrative art influences societies — shaping beliefs, communicating values, inspiring imagination, and creating communities.
We posted images of the museum as a “landmark in the making” in August 2022 and January 2024 here.
