Sessions House
Sessions House is a 12 room, 2 1/2-story single family residence on the renowned Carroll Avenue in the Angelino Heights area of Los Angeles. It was designed by Joseph Cather Newsom and built in 1889 for dairy owner Charles H. Sessions. Newsom featured this house in his “Picturesque and Artistic Homes and Buildings of California” published in 1890. One source suggests that this was a transition house for Newsom, as he moved away from Victorian gingerbread toward the simpler lines and shingle work of what he himself labeled a “California house.” Like many Angelino Heights Victorians, the house was divided into apartments after World War I. It was returned to a single-family residence after being sold in 1974. It is Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #52 and a contributing structure of the 1300 Block of Carroll Avenue entry on the National Register of Historic Places.
