Spurgeon Building
William H. Spurgeon bought just over 74 acres of the Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana land grant in October 1869. The original townsite of Santa Ana as platted by Mr. Spurgeon, and surveyed by George Wright, was recorded December 13, 1870. Starting with a small general store, Spurgeon’s importance in both business and civic enterprises grew with the town. On August 19, 1913, ground was broken for the “culmination” of the Spurgeon commercial enterprises — the four-story, Neo-classical style Spurgeon Building. Capped with a domed Swiss clock tower on the northeast corner, it was Santa Ana’s first skyscraper. The building was bought by Scott Ostlund and Jeff Smith in August 2018 and given a thorough top-to-bottom restoration. The Spurgeon Building as list on the National Register of Historic Places.
