Bank of A. Levy Building, Oxnard, Ventura County

Bank of A. Levy Building

Achille Levy, a Hueneme grain and bean broker, established the Bank of A. Levy in Oxnard in 1898. The business occupied several buildings before establishing its headquarters in a 9,000-square-foot property located on the corner of A and 5th Streets in 1927. The company hired the renowned Los Angeles architectural firm of Morgan, Walls, and Clements to design the Beaux-Arts Classical style building. In the 112 years before it was acquired by First Interstate Bank, the Bank of A. Levy was Ventura County’s largest locally owned bank with 17 branches throughout the county. Achille Levy considered his bank to be an integral part of the community; there were no foreclosures during his lifetime, even during the depression in the 1930s. It is a Ventura County Landmark and eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
