El Segundo Woman’s Club
In September 1912, a four-room frame schoolhouse, built on the present site of Richmond Street School in El Segundo, opened its doors to 62 elementary students. It continued to serve as an elementary school until 1933 after which it was moved to the grounds of the high school to house students while repairs were made to the high school from damage sustained in the 1933 Long Beach earthquake. In 1936, with repairs completed and the students returned to their classrooms, the school was put up for sale. It was purchased by the El Segundo Woman’s Club and moved to property they had bought for a clubhouse. Noted LA architects John C. Austin and Frederic M. Ashley donated their services to advise on interior remodeling for the club’s use and Austin provided the design for the Neoclassical entry. The schoolhouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
