Hepner Hall

San Diego Normal School, founded in 1897, became San Diego State Teachers College in 1921. In the 1920s, the school outgrew its 17-acre campus on Park Boulevard. In 1928, Alphonzo E. Bell donated a 125-acre site in the Mission Palisades tract for a new campus. Construction and relocation were funded and ground breaking was on October 7, 1929. In February, 1931, the college moved to the newly completed campus consisting of six buildings, becoming San Diego State College. State of California Public Works Dept. Architect Howard Hazen designed the buildings in a Hispano/Moresque Mission Revival style. The Academic Building, the original campus entrance, was renamed Hepner Hall in 1976. It is considered the symbol of the campus and is the most photographed building on campus. The San Diego State College historic district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
