J.W. Blank House

The J.W. Blank Residence was one of the earlier homes built in the Los Feliz Square subdivision laid out by the Janss Company. It was designed in 1927 by Harry Hayden Whiteley in his signature Spanish Colonial Revival style and completed in 1928. John and Willmina Blank moved to Los Angeles from Missouri with their daughter, Pauline, to retire, although the fact that Pauline was a student at UCLA may have been a contributing factor. Most likely Pauline met fellow ceramic artist Laura F. Andreson at UCLA. Andreson established the ceramics department at UCLA in 1933 and gained national renown for her work. By 1940, Andreson had moved into the Blank house. Pauline died on August 8, 2003, at the age of 100. The Blank Residence was sold the following March – the first time it had been sold since it was built. The house is a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.
