Gamble House

Gamble House in Pasadena is an iconic American Craftsman Style residence built in 1908/09 as the winter residence for David and Mary Gamble. It was designed by the renowned Greene and Greene architectural firm, showing an influence from traditional Japanese aesthetics and reflecting the Gambles’ attraction to the environment. David and Mary lived in the house until their deaths in 1923 and 1929, respectively. Mary’s younger sister, Julia, also lived with the family. Cecil Gamble and his wife Louise began living in the house after Julia’s death in 1944, and briefly considered selling it. They soon changed their minds, however, when prospective buyers spoke of painting the interior teak and mahogany woodwork white! It remained in the Gamble family until 1966, when it was deeded to the city of Pasadena. It is on the National Register of Historic Places, a National Historic Landmark and a California Historical Landmark.
