Getty Villa
Established in Pacific Palisades by oil tycoon J. Paul Getty in 1954 to house his art collection, the VilAfter establishing the J. Paul Getty Museum Trust in 1954, Getty opened the J. Paul Getty Museum in his ranch house in Malibu (today, Pacific Palisades), periodically exhibiting his Greek and Roman antiquities, 18th-century French furniture and European paintings. In 1968, Getty conceived and planned a new museum down the hill from his property and in 1970 contruction started on the Getty Villa. Dedicated to the study of the arts and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria, the Getty Villa opened in 1974. The villa design was inspired by the Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum and incorporated additional details from several other ancient sites. The Villa closed in 1997 for renovation, reopening in January 2006.la was renovated starting in 1997, reopening in 2005. The Villa itself is “Roman-inspired architecture surrounded by Roman-style gardens” housing more than 44,000 Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities.
