Trona Pinnacles
Over 500 tufa spires, ranging from 11,000 to 100,000 years old, rise up to 140 feet from the bed of the Searles Dry Lake basin. Similar to the Mono Lake Tufa, the Trona Pinnacles are composed primarily of calcium carbonate. They can be seen in movies and TV series including Planet of the Apes, Star Trek V: the Last Frontier and Battlestar Galactica, a Lady Gaga music video and numerous commercials. They are listed as a National Natural Landmark.
