Pilgrim, Ocean Institute
The Pilgrim, a replica of the sailing vessel Richard Henry Dana Jr. wrote about in “Two Years Before the Mast”, keeled over and sank in its slip at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point on Sunday, March 29, 2020. The 130-foot-long tall ship served as a classroom for marine science and maritime history programs since its arrival in 1981. It had been scheduled to be hauled out and undergo repairs in January, but the shipyard was overloaded.
