Richard and Mary Hunt purchased a large parcel of land in 1876 to establish the Salto Ranch in what is now the Lynn Ranch area of Thousand Oaks. They planted numerous eucalyptus trees and a grove of olive trees on the ranch.

Moving to Los Angeles in 1893, Peter Janss became a land developer and, with sons Harold and Edwin, formed the Janss Corporation. In the early 1900s they purchased 10,000 acres in the Conejo Valley and began planning a total community.

The Crowley House in Thousand Oaks was built in 1910 on what was then the Newbury Ranch for newlyweds Frank and Mae Casey Crowley. In the early 1920s it served as a real estate office for the 1st housing development in the Conejo Valley.

A lighthouse has marked the eastern Santa Barbara Channel entrance to Port Hueneme since 1874. The current concrete “art moderne” structure was built in 1941 and is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard ANT LA-LB.
