Lions Lighthouse for Sight

The ten-story tall Lions Lighthouse for Sight stands on a hill at the end of ShoreLine Aquatic Park in Long Beach. It was built in 2000 “as a permanent reminder of Lions Clubs International’s dedication to ending blindness.”

John Temple bought the land on which Rancho Los Cerritos was built and constructed the two-story Monterey-style adobe in 1844 for his cattle operation headquarters. Jotham Bixby lived with his family in the adobe from 1866 to 1881.

Douglas Park started with the 1940 purchase of 200 acres by Donald Douglas and Carl Cover. Sale of the property in 2012 included an agreement to preserve the ‘Fly DC Jets’ sign, a Long Beach Historic Landmark since August 2016.

Planning for replacement of the current Gerald Desmond Bridge started in 2008. The two 515-foot-high towers were completed in 12/2017. The ribbon cutting ceremony was on 10/2/2020. It is expected to be open to traffic on 10/5.
