This one-story structure was built for William Rapp as a beer hall in 1875, the same year the city of Santa Monica was founded. Rapp Saloon, as it came to be known, was the first brick structure in the city.

More info & imagesSears, Roebuck and Co. opened a large, new store in Santa Monica in 1947. It was designed in the Late Moderne style by architect Rowland Crawford, who was known at the time for his design of the Times-Mirror building in L.A.
More info & imagesThe long, narrow Santa Monica Municipal Pier was built in 1909. It became a popular place to walk and fish. A shorter, wider “pleasure pier” featuring a carousel in the Looff Hippodrome was built on its southern side in 1916.
