Charles Lummis built his house, El Alisal, between 1897 & 1910 on a 3-acre lot at the south end of the Arroyo Seco in northeast Los Angeles. The Rustic American Craftsman stone house was built by hand by Lummls and a few Indian laborers.

The Long Beach Main Post Office opened in September 1934. Its architectural style has been described as “Post-Quake Moderne” because the Moderne style of Art Deco architecture was prevalent as Long Beach was rebuilt after the 1933 quake.

Park Place Methodist Episcopal Church South is a remarkable example of a Classical Revival building, almost unique in San Diego. Designed by renowned architect Norman Foote Marsh, it was built in 1910 at the edge of Balboa Park.

Strathearn Historical Park was established in 1968 when the Simi Adobe-Strathearn House and a 6-acre parcel of land on which it was built were donated to Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District to be preserved as a historical landmark.

The Governor of California, Manuel Micheltorena, granted 44,322 acres to Juan José Warner in 1844. From 1849 to 1861, the ranch was important as a stop for emigrant travelers and the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach line.

St. Mary of the Assumption Church

The original St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Whittier was dedicated on July 9, 1893. It was destroyed by a fire in March 1912. The 2nd church opened in March 1914 and was decommissioned in 1959 when the 3rd and present building opened.

SoCal Landmarks is an ongoing project to document the myriad sites, buildings, structures, monuments, and other natural and historical points of importance and/or interest that are considered locally, regionally and/or nationally as landmarks in the ten southern counties of California - Imperial, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Kern and San Luis Obispo. The project is supported by contributions from a collaboration of photographers with varying levels of skills and experience, but a common interest in the place we all call home - Southern California.
