The Gaslamp Quarter in San Diego began as William Heath Davis’ New Town in 1850. Initially supported by a real estate boom, the area eventually slid into decay. Business and property owners banded together to revitalize the area in 1974.

Balboa Park began as 1400 acres of land set aside in 1868 by San Diego civic leaders. Balboa Park boasts 17 museums and cultural institutions, lush gardens, entertainment venues, and the world-famous San Diego Zoo.

The Star of India at the San Diego Maritime Museum is the world’s oldest active sailing ship. Originally named Euterpe, it was built in Ramsey, Isle of Man, in 1863. It was renamed Star of India in 1901 during its service in Alaska.

Construction of the Coronado Bridge in San Diego started in February, 1967, after overcoming numerous obstacles including the concerns of the U.S. Navy. It opened in August, 1969, as part of the city’s bicentennial celebration.

Standing on the site of the 1st mission and fort in California in 1769, the building known as the San Diego Presidio, designed by William Templeton Johnson, was built in 1928-29 by the city of San Diego on land donated by George Marston.

Founded in 1769, the Mission San Diego de Alcalá was the 1st of the mission churches in California. In 1931 it was rebuilt to what architects J. E. Loveless & J. Marshall Miller determined was what the 1813 church must have looked like.

Although only in use 1855-1891, the Old Point Loma Lighthouse stands watch over the entry to San Diego Bay. Its prominent position at 422′ above sea level was an issue when the light could not be seen during periods of fog & low clouds.
