The original St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Whittier was dedicated on July 9, 1893. It was destroyed by a fire in March 1912. The 2nd church opened in March 1914 and was decommissioned in 1959 when the 3rd and present building opened.

The adobe home of the last governor of Mexican California, Don Pio Pico, stands on the grounds of Pio Pico State Historic Park in Whittier. The five acre park was once part of Pico’s 9,000 acre ranch, Rancho Paso de Bartolo.

In 1887, Jonathan Bailey, newly elected president of the Pickering Land and Water Company, and his wife, Rebecca, moved into the simple, six-room Old Ranch House on the Thomas Ranch to direct the development of the Whittier community.
