Samuel-Navarro Residence
The Samuel-Navarro Residence, integrated into a hillside in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles, is a single-family residence built for Louis Samuel and his wife. The four-level, Mayan Revival style structure, designed by Lloyd Wright, was completed in 1928. Samuel was business manager and personal assistant to silent film star Ramon Novarro. Novarro assumed ownership of the house in 1931 after it was discovered that Samuel had been embezzling money from him. Novarro lived in the residence until the late 1930s. Making the house his own, he commissioned Wright to expand the gardens and interior and hired art director Cedric Gibbons to design the interiors in an Art Deco style. More recent owners have included actresses Diane Keaton and Christina Ricci. The Samuel-Navarro Residence was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1974.
