Long Beach Community Hospital
Long Beach Community Hospital, designed in a Spanish Colonial Revival style by Long Beach architect Hugh R. Davies, was completed in 1924. The first hospital building contained 125 beds. The 1933 Long Beach earthquake shook the hospital, but did little damage, and it continued to provide medical care to residents. Subsequent expansions and upgrades added a new wing, the opening of an intensive care unit, a nuclear medicine department and a coronary care unit. Unable to meet state seismic requirements, the hospital closed in 2018 due the discovery of an active earthquake fault under the property. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the hospital reopened for almost a year to provide needed hospital beds. Ongoing efforts seek to revitalize the facility as a “wellness campus.” The Heritage Building of the hospital is a City of Long Beach Historic Landmark.
