Carl Stroschein House
The Little Yellow House, the former home of Carl and Ruth Stroschein, is a small, 650 sq ft cornerstone of San Juan Capistrano’s transition from a remote farming community to a town more integrated into Orange County. Carl’s parents, William and Frederika, had emigrated to Anaheim in 1885 and managed a successful vineyard until it was lost to the Anaheim grape blight. They relocated to San Juan Capistrano and acquired 40 acres of land that was planted with walnut, orange and avocado trees. Carl worked for his father and, with the help of his brother Fred, built a house for himself and his wife, Ruth, in 1927. Carl was the last elected Constable for the San Juan Township, serving from 1938 until 1953. Restoration of the property is ongoing, and ownership is in flux. Carl Stroschein House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
