Monday Club
The clubhouse of the Monday Club of San Luis Obispo was originally built for and has remained the headquarters of a dynamic group of civic-minded women formed in 1925. The building was designed by Hearst Castle architect Julia Morgan and constructed by prominent local builder James Jepson in 1933-1934. It is the only other building designed by Morgan in the county. Thanks to then club President Grace Barneberg persuading cab driver Steve Zegar, who was known to drive Morgan from the train station to San Simeon when she arrived by train, to inquire whether she might design the clubhouse, Morgan not only agreed, but did it in exchange for just room and board. Morgan designed the Spanish Colonial building to resemble a garden gazebo with an interior awning over the stage area. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
