Frederick Lang Office

In May 1991, Frederick M. Lang was memorialized in the park in Laguna Beach that bears his name. Emigrating from Germany in 1934 to study at the Chicago Art Institute, Lang was largely self-taught in landscape architecture, practicing from his South Laguna office from 1947. Lang had a notable impact on what Laguna Beach looks like today. Other commissions included the grounds of UC Irvine and the Tala Knoll Water Gardens in the Los Angeles County Arboretum. He also taught at UC Irvine and Cal Poly Pomona. His office, a 2-story Tudor Revival structure identified as “Historic building 31711” on Google maps, was designed by the locally prolific architect, Aubrey St. Clair. The sign over the door lists Ann Christoph before Lang’s name. The former mayor of Laguna Beach worked with Lang from 1982 until his death in 1996.
