C.Z. Culver House

Charles Zenas “C.Z.” Culver moved west from New York in the early 1880s. He made his home in the City of Orange in what is now Orange County and served on the first city council. Culver tried his hand at ranching and wrote agricultural books based on his experience growing Muscat raisin grapes, established real estate and immigration offices in downtown Los Angeles and built houses for himself and real estate speculation. The C.Z. Culver House in Orange was the former, the C.Z. Culver House in Monrovia was the latter. It was designed by Joseph Cather Newsom and built by George E. Keyes in 1887. It was moved in 1919 to make way for a commercial development and again in 1924 to its present location. Catherine Wilson and her son, Sam, moved into the house after her husband died. It remained in the family until Sam died in the late 1930s. The house is a Monrovia City Landmark.
