Rancho Los Alamitos
Rancho Los Alamitos was one of five ranchos that resulted from the partition of the Rancho Los Nietos grant in 1834. Abel Stearns purchased the rancho in 1844. After disastrous floods and droughts in the 1860s, Stearns lost control of the ranch and it was leased to a number of farmers until John William Bixby and two partners purchased it in 1881. Over time, the land was partitioned and sold off. The heirs of the Bixby family gifted the remainder of the rancho to the people of Long Beach in 1968. The historic site opened to the public in 1970. The adobe ranch house on the property grew out of a core of four rooms built in 1790 to an eighteen room structure in a “U” shaped plan. Other structures on the property are associated with early 20th-century Bixby Ranch operations. Rancho Los Alamitos is a Long Beach Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
