Coronado Boathouse

The Coronado Boathouse is located on Glorietta Bay down the hill from the Hotel Del Coronado. It was built in 1887 as a sort of “practice round” before construction of the Hotel Del began later that year. Hotel guests would gather by the Boathouse to picnic, boat or swim; a Boathouse keeper lived in the building and oversaw its upkeep and activities. In 1903, biologist William E. Ritter, later co-founder of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, used the Boathouse for his marine biology research. The Coronado Yacht Club established its first headquarters in the Boathouse in 1912, followed by an occupancy of the San Diego Yacht Club in the 1920s. In 1967, the building was leased to the Chart House restaurant chain. It was moved onto new pilings closer to shore and renovated inside and out. The Boathouse was recognized as a Coronado historical landmark in 1973.
