Andreas Canyon
Captain Juan Andreas was the last Cahuilla Indian of what’s now known as the Agua Caliente Band to leave the Indian Canyons area southwest of Palm Springs. One of the three canyons in the area was named after him. Andreas Canyon has a spring-fed, perennial creek that sustains the world’s second largest California Fan Palm (Washingtonia filifera) oasis, sycamores, cottonwoods, willows and a multitude of plant species as well as diverse wildlife, including bobcats, coyotes and numerous bird species. Ancient bedrock mortars and metates used centuries ago by the Cahuilla for preparing food can be found at the canyon entrance. The Indian Canyons area is a protected nature reserve, managed and stewarded by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians.
