Home Savings and Loan
The former Home Savings and Loan Bank (now Chase Bank) at Beach and La Palma in Buena Park is generally a massive Modernist block with substantial roof overhangs. It was built in 1978 facing the corner on a diagonal. Like some 150 Home Savings bank buildings, it was designed and built by Millard Sheets featuring a huge mosaic rendered by the Sheets Studio team of Denis O’Connor and Susan Hertel. And like many of the mosaics, its subject is topical to the location – in this case an obvious nod to Knott’s Berry Farm which the building faces. This was the second Sheets-designed Home Savings bank in Buena Park. The first, older and smaller building is on the opposite corner across La Palma and is now a restaurant.
