Chaplain’s House
The Chaplain’s Residence in the Hillcrest area of San Diego is the last remaining structure of the St. Joseph’s Sanitarium, a hospital founded in 1890 by the Sisters of Mercy. Construction on the hospital began in 1891 and extended through several years, with the addition of buildings and expansion of existing structures. The Chaplain’s Residence, built in 1896 and first occupied in 1897, was moved about a block and a half in 1920, and just another fifteen feet in 1922 due to the extension of Washington Street. Its principal significance lies in its architectural importance as an unusually fine and well preserved example of a late 19th century vernacular cottage with Stick-Style and Queen Anne elements. It is a City of San Diego Historic Landmark and listed as the Chaplain’s House on the National Register of Historic Places.
