Pasadena Community Playhouse
The Pasadena Community Playhouse in Pasadena is a not an uncommon example of a theater presentation organization and the space in which it operates being conflated into a single, perhaps confusing label. One source states: “First sharing performance space in a burlesque house, the Pasadena Community Playhouse was founded in 1917 by theater impresario Gilmor Brown.” The LA Conversevancy states: “Opened in 1925, the Pasadena Community Playhouse was designed by Elmer Grey and built by the Winter Construction Co.” A Spanish Colonial Revival building with Mission elements, the Playhouse, as we choose to identify this landmark, is centered around a courtyard enclosed on three sides. It has been the official State Theater of California since 1937, a California Historical Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
