Holy Family Catholic Church
The Holy Family Catholic Church in South Pasadena is recognized as one of the finest examples of Spanish Baroque Revival architecture in Southern California. In 1906, the Catholic Church moved to establish a new parish in South Pasadena and purchased land for the construction of a church. In 1910, the Holy Family Parish was established, meeting in a small cottage built on that land. Property was purchased in 1923 to build a more permanent building. In 1926, Fr. James B. Morris was assigned to Holy Family to raise the money to build the new church. Construction of the church, designed by Emmett G. Martin, began in 1927 and was dedicated in April 1928. Parish families raised the funds with bazaars, barbecues, dances and card parties and even amidst the Depression added an elementary school and acquired properties for a parish hall and parish offices.
