Banning House

Banning House, or Phineas Banning Residence, in Wilmington was lived in by three generations of the Banning family until it and the surrounding land were acquired by the City of Los Angeles in 1927. Phineas Banning — entrepreneur, founder of the city of Wilmington, and “the Father of the Port of Los Angeles” — built the house in 1863-64. The house has two full floors with a spacious third story attic and basement. A departure from the predominant adobe haciendas at the time, it has been described as “one of the best examples of Greek Revival architecture in the west.” The LA Department of Recreation and Parks manages the Residence, Stagecoach, Barn and Gardens in cooperation with the Friends of Banning Museum. The property has been designated as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument, a California Historical Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
