Grotowski Barn
Architect William Pereira and his staff created the master plans for the UCI Campus, Newport Center and the City of Irvine at Urbanus Square, formerly the site of the Newport Harbor Buffalo Ranch. Pereira was a self-described “barn freak” and he moved in other barns to create additional office space. One of the barns, a Sears and Roebuck pre-cut building, was moved to Laguna Niguel for his field office while working on the “Ziggurat” for North American Aviation. In 1971, it was moved to the eastern end of the UCI campus near three farmhouses that were originally part of the Irvine Ranch. The buildings were used by the university’s Farm School until 2007. The barn and an adjacent yurt were used by UCI Professor of Drama Jerzy Grotowski while working on his Objective Drama Project. It is now used for workshops, classes and performances by UCI arts students.
