International Surfing Museum

The City of Huntington Beach Historic Context & Survey Report identifies this building on Olive Drive as the Dr. Hawes Medical Building built in 1936. Dr. Hawes appears to have been very involved with health services in the city for most of the first half of the 1900s. It is unclear how long Dr. Hawes occupied the building, but it served not only as his office, but as an emergency hospital particularly for workers injured in the very nearby oil fields. From September 1984 until November 1986, it was Safari Sam’s, a hot spot for punk groups like Jane’s Addition, Black Flag and Social Distortion (to name just a few). The International Surfing Museum has called it home since 1990. An obvious feature of the museum, but not the building, is the 42-foot record holding surfboard that 66 people rode to fame in 2015.
